Abstract

The study examined the extent and constraints to the use of modern Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) by extension agents in Edo State. Data were collected with the use of structured questionnaire from forty two (42) extension agents with the Edo State Agricultural Development Programme (EDADP). Data collected were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and means, while hypotheses were tested with the use of Logistic Regression. The extension agents sampled had an average age of 45 years and an average working experience of 12.5 years. Extension agents have access to GSM ( X̅ = 2.90) only. They could only operate GSM ( X̅ = 2.57), and it is frequently used ( X̅ = 3.43). They were of the opinion that GSM ( X̅ = 3.55) and computers ( X̅ = 3.53) were the most useful modern ICTs for agricultural extension work. The major constraints encountered were high cost of computers ( X̅ = 3.60) and GSM handsets ( X̅ =3.36) unreliability of internet service provider ( X̅ = 2.26).Educational qualification (b = 2.318) was the only significant determinant of their modern ICTs usage. The study recommends that the National Agriculture Research and Extension System (NARES) and The Federal Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should develop internet website for the various ADPs so that extension agents can access internet easily for their work.
